Is there any smaller, carnivorous catfish that looks like a catfish (like a redtail or TSN or Gulper) that can live happily on it's own in a 20 gallon?

If you get a 20g long then consider the cetopsis coecutiens. Cool oddball and will voracious in it’s own way.

I already have the tank, that's the thing. It's getting emptied soon so I wanted to get a catfish in there

If you're wanting it stay in there for life...not a catfish but carnivorous fish that would do better in that size tank my vote is Congo Puffer. Super cool lurky type puffer that ambush from the sand/gravel bottom.

Most of the catfish that would do well in that size tank permanently are not predatory, i.e. Cory Cats, Porthole Cats, or Wood Cats (Tatia).

The thing is...I hate puffer fish. With a passion. I hate their teeth. Any other recommendations?

Batrochoglanis raninus is a great little RTC shaped cat, platysirilus mucosus look tiger shovelnose to an extent but 20g would be a little small for these, mine seems to have stopped growing at 5"sl.

South American bumblebee catfish.

But I'd filter Planet Catfish Cat-eLog by size and study the hits.

I cannot find any pictures of this Platysirilus mucosus

You could try mystus or ompok species. Some species stay small & slow grower. It's hard to find something that 'same but smaller' type fish. But you could find it in goonch, Glyptothorax sp.
