I was wondering about smaller rays (hystrix, reticulata, scobina). Is it possible to keep them with larger cichlids? Should I try and get larger individuals so that they might hold up better in case they get picked on or will small ones be ok to grow out?

i tried this once and the cichlids no matter what size would always nip at the rays tails...

guess they kept thinking it was a worm or something??? LOL

I've kept 6" motoros and flower rays with 4" geophagus with no problems. If you're looking to keep larger and more aggressive cichlids, it's a recipe for disaster. I had an instance where tails were nipped up past the barb overnight, ending up in the ray's demise. The nips started out as investigation, but ended up as, "hey...this could be food!"....so please be careful.

If you're talking about the smaller rays, they'll more than likely be smaller than the 6" motoros when you get them creating more of a risk. With larger rays, you have to make sure that the cichlids can't be pounced on and torn apart...It's a delicate balance I know, but some trial and error has to be done. Just monitor the situation or search the forums. There are plenty of threads indicating what people have kept successfully, as well as the horror stories.

You can keep rays with discus. Both are relatively docile, the rays SHOULD only sting if they're threatened badly but i think the dicus would more than keep their distance.

Carl.

I keep my stingray with discus and the ray is buddys with one and is always around him. I tinhk it is possible to cohab the two. I havent had any discus stung yet(knock on wood).

a lot of the "new world" chiclids do good with rays...bout the more aggressive/bigger ones dont...they will nip the tail and the eyes too...i wouldnt risk it

Hey everyone thanks for the responses! OK so I will try to stay away from the more large and aggressive cichlids. Right now I have some geophagus surinamensis and some gold severums. What do you think about those? I also really wanna get one of those electric blue jacks. I hear they are a little more docile than the regular ones. What do you think about that?

The geos should do fine. The Sevs and Jacks can be a lil nippy sometimes, but I know people that have had them with rays.
