Is there a catfish that stays 2 ft or under that has the same type personality as a Redtail Catfish? I'm building a 700g (48"x96"x36") currently that will house some large cichlids and oddballs, but even this size tank doesn't seem bigger enough for a fish that can reach 3.5 ft. Plus I think it would eat some of my fish that stay in the 12in range... But I really like their friendly puppy dog personality... Are there any cats that stay a bit smaller but have the same outgoing interactive tendencies? Thanks!

Leiarius pictus

They like to eat and you could pet them.

Leiarius pictus (utterly non-predatory).

Any Cephalosilirus spp (2'-ers may prey on 1' tank mates if can fit in their mouth).

Large bullheads (fun and personable).

Channel (might grow too big).

Doradidae - Oxydoras may be too big but Lithodoras dorsalis, Pterodoras, irwini could work - will enthusiastically feed from your hand.

Thanks! I think Leiarius pictus looks like exactly what I want! I am planning to get a Giraffe catfish - I know they can reach 3ft, but it seems 2ft is more common, plus they are not predatory so I don't have to worry about them eating my fish! - but I kind of wanted one more catfish.

But now I have also been thinking about bullheads too (coincidentally, even before you mentioned them). I used to have a big guy who was cool, and the FL Brown ones that are mottled are both cool looking and would do well at tropical temps...
hmmm...

I agree g-cats could fit your bill too and yes, FL browns are the ones I've had and liked a lot. My 1'-er was fearless and interactive. W.r.t. interactivity though, few or none can beat Cephalosilurus IMHE.

Wow! Jellies are ugly! I've been known to suddenly think ugly fish are cute though if I like their personality... BUT.. there is a picture on PlanetCatfish of one eating what looks to be a full or mostly full grown Oscar... soooo
