My daughter has been bothering me to get her a turtle. Are there any turtles out there that stay relatively small?

U can get a common Musk turtle ,razorback musk , striped neck musk or even a loggerhead musk turtle. they stay pretty small and they stay most of the time in water. U can also get a mud turtle or even a reeves turtle

Turtles may not be a good "kid" pet, since they live so long and require frequent water changes. You're going to be stuck caring for the creature for a long time after she loses interest.

That said, the American mud and musk turtles (Kinosternon and Sternotherus species) are good choices, as muskkeeper noted. Males of some emydids such as most maps, painteds, spotteds, etc. also stay small. Even a small turtle still needs a fair amount of room; say, a 40 breeder or similar for a mud or musk, a 75 for any other small turtle at minimum.

What size are we talking about? in inches?

Reeves turtles tend to stay pretty small and are much more active than the musk/muds I find.

musks or mud turtles are great, they stay small, require less land area, and do not require UV rays.

Yep, and maybe 6" for a male painted, not much bigger for a female. Male maps as said are small generally, but females get bigger so if you're buying a baby turt hoping for a male is a crapshoot.
