My daughter has been bothering me to get her a turtle. Are there any turtles out there that stay relatively small?

That said, the American mud and musk turtles (Kinosternon and Sternotherus species) are good choices, as muskkeeper noted. Males of some emydids such as most maps, painteds, spotteds, etc. also stay small. Even a small turtle still needs a fair amount of room; say, a 40 breeder or similar for a mud or musk, a 75 for any other small turtle at minimum.
