We all want our bichirs to get to monster sizes, but I would like to know if anyone else has patience to grow their stocks or they always get the biggest one in stores.

I myself likes to start small because the of the feeling of satisfaction seeing them grow. All the bichirs I bought started as small/baby with the exception of my last addition which is an 12" WC ansorgii for $30 from one of the member here :naughty:

I like to grow mine out for the same reason, and for the pride in saying that I raised it myself.

I kinda like both I like the feeling of knowing that you have been apart of the growth of one of your polys, but I also love seeing a monster in the tank. IMO when you grow a poly out I never really notice the growth because I see it everyday so I only notice the growth when I see a before and after. However when I put a new monster poly in the tank I love watching and observing it and it's monster size.

I believe most grow bigger in the wild than in captivity. That is why I bought a freshly caught 22" Teug. I never hear of them being that large. I hope I get a few more inches out of it.

I have both, have a few rescue fish and a few i have a grown up, and 2 jd still growing up.

I like growing out small fish if it's fast growing. If it's on the slower side, I'll probably buy a large fish.

I take what i can get for the most part, As long as it's nice quality stock starting size is the least of my concern.

Although with larger species I prefer get them 8-10" ish, big enough that they can go straight into the bigger tank with the rest of them, but small enough that it doesn't drive shipping costs up. In my neck of the woods finding anything other then CB senegal's is a rare occurrence, Most has to be shipped in.

There is a great deal of satisfaction from growing out a young Bichir to a large adult. All my large adult bichirs have been grown out from a starting size ranging from 3 to 9 inches. That said if I had access to buy a 20" plus Bichir I most certainly would.
