smallest fly river ive ever seen

Somebodies breeding them..
$800 is a little steep, I've seen them for cheaper.

JW, Since under 4 inches they are sold as "scientific purposes", do people actually listen to this. Do the sellers even check, or it's just there so if the buyer got caught, they can't sue the sellers.

No one is breeding them, they get dug up and "captive hatched" from sites in New Guinea.

Either eggs stolen out of the habitat (it is FRT hatching season) or somone figured out how to get them to breed.

I can get 100 of em' at that size right now, but it's illegal as hell - and if I can't get a confirmation on them being captive bred then it's unethical.

If someone figured out how to get 'em to breed, I'm sure you'd hear about it. It was done once to my knowledge at a Boston (?) zoo...

I believe I know the seller, he operates a herp store that specializes in torts and snakes. He always has torts that are under cites restrictions.

My best guess is there "accidentally" shipped in with RES that he sells in bulk.

He used to sell the frt's dirt cheap, but I guess he caught on to market value.

Any Fly River under 10" is gray area Illegal untill someone starts producing them with consistancy and actually documents the process. They are protected in PNG, and aren't allowed to be Exported from the Island. The hatchlings you see are from eggs collected from the known nest sites. Once hatched, they're laundered in Indo, Japan, and Europe, then sent here. USFW knows this, and keeps tabs on anyone Re-Selling hatchlings. End users are fine once they have the animals. I've never seen one confiscated, as they're more worried about who's actually bringing them in. I'd run away from anyone who is selling them in any kind of quantity. It's just an invitation for the USFW or your local DNR to come knocking. I've had several people try to sell me hatchlings Online or at Shows with "Paperwork", but I have yet to see any kind of documentation to go with them. The few Zoos and Private Individuals working with groups are still a few years away from seeing any kind of production. 90% of the FRTs that have been hatched in captivity were from gravid, Wild Caught Females when they were legal to bring in. Very few have actually been Captive Bred and Born........

With all the export restrictions and cites listings, I don't think home aquaria is the reason behind the reduced wild population. They were relatively rarely kept prior to the bans and even now, I think the ban just increased there desirability to people who would've considered keeping one before.

Regardless, the main problem with the frt is that I can go down to my local asian market and buy a frozen one for $8.
