I've got a friend with a 125 gallon tank who is interested in getting a gar or two and we were wondering if there were any kinds of gars that could fit in his tank. If not, then we're going to try a different stock plan. thanks for any and all input.

if the tank is at least 18" wide, a Florida/spotted gar would work for a little while, but then would need an upgrade. best bet is to get a tank that is 24" wide, that way upgrades can wait for a few years--

He should get a native fish from where he is from. That way if the fish got too big he could release it into an invoronment that could support it.

He could get some NeedleNose Gar. There are not true gar though. They are very pretty fish. I have one, and he's a very slow grower. He's currently about 4". I've read different reports, saying that they will get anywhere from 8" up to 16", so I can't give you a definate size... They stay primarly at the top of the tank, so you may want to get some other fish that will flush out the space as well. They will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouths.

yea needle nose are the smallest that are very gar like. be wary of what tankmates you pick as they are very easy to pick on they are predators but not aggressive at all

Very good point! Also, they are very skittish. They are good jumpers, so make sure you have a tight lid with no holes.

might i add rammers as well the fact that they can be very skittish at first tends to lead into ramming into the glass leading to spine injuries and death,
if you have the 6 ft long 125 you could prolly have 4 needles and something that wouldnt bother them maybe some sort of smaller geo like a threadfin?
