which gar species is the smallest?max size??is it ok to keep with arowana?

Smallest species for an Aquarium is the Shortnosed often only reaching 20 inches on average. Closest to this would be the Spotted often reaching 24 inches.

Naturally though there is a bit variation in individual fish so a larger potential size may be obtained.

I do not suggest Gars with arowana as it is an unpredictable mix.

Doesn't Gar and Arows also take up the same areas in the tank, like they are both "Top Swimmers"?

exactly. that's why it's a unpredictable mix. ;)

That's what I kinda thought, even at my LFS, they separate them into two large 180g tanks long.

I'm not disagreeing, i qite agree, this combo is obviously a bad mix, but why does everyone seem to mix them? My local has 2 small arrows and 2 small gars (not sure wat kind) but they're about the same size...?

Ferco, You might not see the impact of seeing these two species in a tank together in the first couple of months, but stress factors and eating habits may come to light over a longer period of time that these are not good "Mix Buddys". Try it if you want to though, This Web-site is only the opinions, thoughts and recommendations of other people like yourself that have a fawn interest in fish keeping. Good Luck and Cheers!!:clap :headbang2 :grinyes: :)

In many fish there is a change in behavior between juvinile and adults as they reach maturity many fish who tolerated tankmates get agressive and or territorial.-Anne
