I've done a good amount of research and so far I have yet to find the specie I was told about by someone that only reaches 12 inches. Is this true? We were talking characins and he said oh I may be getting this ATF that only grows to be a foot!

If there is a specie that stays this small it must be rare or more people on here would probably have it, I've never seen it. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Or is this dude just being given faulty info just to try and get rid of fish?

hydrocynus forskalii. they pretty much grow to 12 inches in captivity. 18 inches in the wild.

Hydrocynus forskahlii is the smallest. They don't grow to be as large as the others, a five pounder in the wild is a very good fish. In fact, the world record is the size of an average wild VATF, TATF or BATF. 12" is a reasonable estimation in an aquarium, but given enough time I think an 18" FATF is about as reasonable to expect as a 2' VATF. In other words its possible, but it'll take a long time with perfect care.

Had one that grew from 3.5 to 7inches within two months I'd say. Then it slowed down but gained in Garth.

lol I couldn't help but laugh at the Garth autocorrect.

If yours was getting really thick it may have been a brevis. I'd like to see pics.

At a bare minimum a 180 (6x2x2) for life. Ideally however, they'd appreciate a 240 (8x2x2).

The 180 would only really work if you specialize the tank to the fish's needs and you were willing to have few or no tankmates.

Thanks for the info guys! I would love to get one of these when i have a proper setup, sounds much easier then going VATF and no way in hell am i ever going GATF haha unless i own a public aquarium. Then totally going with multiple GATF. Anyone ever have one? The 12 incher not GATF haha i would imagine things like yellow tail cuda and odoe pikes would be good tank mates

Odoes are a no go with ATF. They're sympatric competitors. Odoes will ruthlessly persecute young ATF and in turn, a large ATF will view an odoe as a natural prey item.

Pictured below is my fatf. Its six inches long and just started eating floating krill today. It's well on its way to being pellet trained! I'm actually not 100% on the ID of this one. There is a very, very small chance it's brevis, but I'm about 90% certain it's forskahlii.

Like most young ATF, he darts all over the place and he's damn near impossible to photograph well without my Nikon.
