So I have a 165 (6'x2' wide) with a bunch of predatory characins and cats who are generally peaceful and not skittish. I am not too knowledgeable on cichlids, except for the fact that many are territorial and solitary (I work in a LFS and hear from people with 55 gallon tanks though). Right now we have a P. friedrichstahlii at 6" in a 65g and it is not aggressive towards other fish. I know adult jags though do not tolerate tank mates as well.

I was thinking of maybe Parachromis loiselli but I am confused as to how big they get and how to distinguish them from friedrichstahlii cichlids accurately.

Can anybody give me some tips, info on the smallest or most suitable species for this setup?

That is a good sized tank and good footprint. These types of fish are unpredictable. It is hard to say what will happen as adults, you could have a passive, semi aggressive one or you could end up with a killing machine. Odds are you are only going to be able to grow one or two out to maturity....if you are lucky.

freddies and loisellei are close but both have different features. typically i have found that loisellei will chase but not outright beat and kill other fish. mine is semi aggressive i would say, not skittish at all, and beefy. they are very personal fish, my male is in my avatar
