I know ppl that used a 40W as a growout for a half dozen redbellies untill 4-5".

A 40w makes a great growout but obviously a 75 is better! Be prepared once they hit 2" to start doing bi weekly wc! My shoal of 5 5-6" rbp are in a 90gal w/ fx5 & ac110 and i still do 50% 2x per week! Thats 400% new water/month but its keeps nitrates below 20-30ppm constantly

Is there a piranha that can live in a shoal of two to three in a forty gallon tank?

Sorry but not really. Perhaps the closest you could get would be Wimple Piranha's, but they're not true P's and a shoal of 2-3 doesn't work. It's a phenomenon with schooling/shoaling fish, too small a shoal and it doesn't work. Perfect example Silver Dollars in a group of less than 6 will chase each other rather than school, another example is Exodons same thing too small a school and they turn on each other. If your looking for a good P like fish Exo's would be a good way for you to go based on the tank size your suggesting. They're vicious and make quite a display. If your stuck on having a P I'd look into a solitary P like a Sanchezi they max. out at around 6 inches, but they will not school they will kill each other if you try to put more than one in a tank. I think those are realistically your only choices for a long term 40 gallon set-up. Otherwise a P shoal requires large amounts of space so you can keep a large group of them together to disperse aggression. Also just so you know it's not common for P's to school/shoal, only a few of them actually do. Many P's are actually solitary animals. Hope this helps you.
