Smallest ray/ Minimum tank size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't go by other sites as they will give minimums, and we all know minimums suck. We could all live just fine a 4x4 bathroom but we would be pissed as hell and deprived in numerous ways. Get the biggest tank you can afford and you have the room for. Smallest rays that are easiest to come by with the best price tag are of course retic. I am a huge promotor of retics but I think I am by far in the minority there. I have had nothing but good luck with them. Hardiest ray is the motoro and still a decent price tag on them but they get quite a bit bigger. My retics which are supposed to be smaller rays my female is over 14 inch disk size so that isn't all that small. But please read every sticky that is available and after youhave read through them once or twice feel free to ask more questions. Welcome to the addiction!

Small tanks and rays don't really work.

To me this question is a bit like...what is the smallest amount of food that will keep my kitten alive....remember the rays has to live it's life in the tank plus benefit from the surrounding water quality.

with rays, don't look at what you can "get away with". it is indeed "go big or go home". large (and often custom made) aquariums, overfiltration to the extreme, high food intake, and making them a priority in the tank over other fish (or leaving them to themselves).

minimalist is not a good combination with these guys. if you're looking for a tank that you don't have to clean very often, do water changes, keep up on, i'd recommend overfiltering a tank of tetras.

a red tail cat can live in a 2ft tank for life its just its life wont be that long
