I was going to help out a friend who is setting up an aquarium and I was wondering how small of an aquarium can a green sunfish be in by its self. All of my books say about 20 gallons, but that seems small to me. They might get a 20 gallon, so would any Lepomis work? Also, If they do get a green sunfish, could they have any minnows in there?

Thank you for all of the help.

green sunfish get to 30cm (12in) so I'd go a 75 usgallon at least, especially if you want tank mates. The lepomis gets to 20cm, and both fish are likely territorial, so Id say a 75g as a bare minimum, preferably bigger.

Yes dollar sunfish can work in a 20gal but they are super aggressive towards to each other.

Actually, up to about last week I was planning on setting up a 20 long for a green but had to postpone until the fall. After rethinking it I'd say if it stays in the average or small side you could probably get away with one in a 40 gallon breeder but the bigger the tank the less water changes and filth. Orangespots would be a good choice.

The green don't stay smaller as most green sunfish I ever seen in the captivity get bigger than the ones in the wild.

Those must be some big greens then since I'm catching 8" ones around here. I'd say go as big as you can then with a 50B as the minimum.

Seen lot of greenies in home aquariums surpassed 10" easily.
