No it's not true. It has to do with the structures that smallies using for spawning. Gravels and sand are what they needs to spawning...not muck and silt.

Thanks!! All I have in my pond right now is bluegills. I read that if I have too many gills they will drive the smallies off the beds to get the eggs? Should I fish them down so there are not as many? I would eventually like to eventually have yellow perch.
Smallmouth bass and bluegills make a poor combo for a pond setting as smallmouth bass have poor reproduction success in pond setting and they don't makes a good predator for most sunfish species. I should suggest you to using largemouth bass as a predator to control the bluegill populations.
