I'm looking into getting a fish to eat my guppies. I looked at many new world cichlids but my water just isn't the correct P.H. for many of them. African cichlids are totally out of the question. The guppies are mine so I am not worried at all about disease or underfed fish. I know the P.H. and water temperature of my local river and I am wondering, would a bluegill or SMB be happy in a 40-55 gallon tank with out any plants, several large rocks and a guppy or two every other day?

small mouth is defianatly out of the question. they are very active and require alot of space. a bluegill shoulde do well in a 55 but you may need to upgrade some time.

Madtom catfish would be a better bet. they'll keep the guppies in check and not need more than a 55. go check your streams for them.

I live In West Virginia, Aren't madtoms a southern fish?

yes another West Virginian:headbang2
a bluegill, longear, green or pumpkinseed sunfish would all do fine in a 55

Madtoms locations is from main to canada east moainly. U may have some in your local rivers creeks and ponds. Get a minnow trap set it up in a local stream . Bluegills or any small bullhead madtom catfish would work for along time.

What's your PH? In my 29g a Convict and Rainbow keep numbers down, haven't had a new guppy make it to maturity since i've added the Convict.

I used to catch some madtoms in the Poca River, they almost looked like bumblebee catfish from S. America but they were very few and far between. A stone cat would be easier to find and still be small enough to live easily in a 55.
