Howdy folks
When I pour my tank water out, or get to say 4 inches from the surface, I always get this strong earthy-fishy smell. It's not foul, but not slight like after a rainfall. Tank is cycled. Is that natural? Thanks

Run Carbon in your filter to clear up the smell for now. Feeding less will prevent the water from smelling. I notice that pellets make my water smell when I use a lot. I’ll only feed pellets a couple days a week for this reason. I’ll use raw fish or shrimp plus veggies because I have a lot of omnivorous fish. I’ll feed flakes periodically but not a lot since they’re real messy and I have to turn all the filters off.
A really high bio load can cause the water to smell also. I used to breed mystery snails and they tend to foul up water pretty quickly.

In addition to the comments above, certain foods can make water smell very strong. Hikari and especially massivore are the worst at making it smell IMO.
+1 to massivore pellets making the water STINK! That’s actually the pellet I was referring to in my post haha.
