So I picked up my tank today and the guy gave me a ton of other stuff but boy does it smell. I think its the +/- 25lbs of used to be live rock that he gave me. Does this smell go away after the tank is up? Also I want to give everything a good cleaning, what is a good way to go about doing this? Anything I can do to get rid of the smell?

hot hot hot hot water!!!!!!!!!! i bought my 120 for 150 it came with all the works of a saltwater setup but it stank like a dead fish. i just cleaned it thoroughly by scrubing it with hot water!!! dont burn yourself!

I heard something about vinegar would this be something to consider? Just use straight vinegar or what?

But after the thorough cleaning the big smell goes away?

Most likely the smell is some die off on the live rock the best way to get rid of the smell is use the kent rock prep tool a 5 gallon bucket with saltwater and use your nose if it smell's scrub the heck out of it till it smell's like the ocean for hard to reach place's a toothbrush or a flat head screwdriver work's good. once it is clean and non-smelling you'll have to cure the live rock for a week or so and test the ammonia once it's at 0 your good to go.

Any other suggestions on cleaning the tank and possibly reinforcing it before putting water in?

you could fill the tank up with hot water and a touch of bleach before you add saltwater and your live rock and sand. you could let it soak for 24 hour's with the hot water and touch of bleach then drain it and rinse it thoroughly and when your done smell all around the tank if you smell and bleach smell rinse again till your 110% sure there is no bleach smell this will do a great cleaning on the tank just take's some patience and time. reinforcing it I dont understand what your saying is the silicon peeling on it or bad??

Nope just want to be cautious I think its probably fine. Is there something a little safer that I can use rather then bleach?

I mean you could just rinse it out with hot water a couple time's and stop at your LFS they often have aquarium cleaner's if your not comfortable with bleach.

i wouldnt use anything other then a rinse in saltwater to rinse the live rock, the die off is good for your tank at the beginning it will allow you to cycle the tank with out fish.

if you got any kind of sand with it i would either wash it or by new sand as lot of gunk can build up in a sand bed.

the tank can be cleaned with bleach or vinegar, with rinse after cleaning, with bleach allow the tank to dry since bleach evaporate, when the smells gone the bleach is gone.

live rock needs to be stored in heated saltwater to stay alive

after the tank is setup expect some smell during the cycle, after it if the smell is still present you can use activated carbon
