yesterday i set up a small 5 gallon tank with a mini filter and added 30 very very small feeders (guppies?) i thought it would make it easier then going back every week.. (i know that feeders can carry diseases so i dont want to get yelled at:nilly: ).. i also feed the oscars and hampala shark ..krill and cichlid pellets.. but from my tank it smells like "fish" never noticed it before today.. would it be the feeder tank underneath or could it be my fish... sorry if this is a weird post.. but family isnt to happy about the smell.. any tips or advice.. am i doing something wrong...? any advice will help! thanks :D

Its probably coming from the feeder tank , if it smells like rotton fish or sulpher then you probably have something rotting in the filter or gravel that has gone anaerbobic.. It could just be the high amounts of ammonnia did you check you paramitors?
regardless i would do a good water change vacumm the substrate and check the filters.

If you setup the tank from scratch then it's not cycled and that is where the smell is coming from.

i will check those.. and the tanks beeen up for a couple months and ive been keeping up with water changes ill check the filter and stuff.. thanks for the help...

i would say that it is from a high level of ammonia being produced from the feeders.

I agree, if the filter was indeed cycled then it must just not have had enough BB to handle the bio-load produced my such a large population being added in a short amount of time. This is why when stocking a new system it is best to start light and not add all the fish at once.

i looked into my filter and saw about 4 of the small feeders caught in it (dead).. is there a way to prevent this? i put them in my tank and its like they get sucked up right away.. should i turn my filter off during feeding? .. sry for all the questions... im kinda new to the fish world..:( but im trying! ;) ... should i stick to feeding only pellets and dried krill? seems to be easier.. but the fish place i got the oscars fed them live feeders..

thats what i thought i would just put a nylon stocking on the pickup tube/s this will help and try feeding less so the fish are hungry and grab the feeders quicker

Personaly i would get your oscars to eat pellets much healthy then feeders just add pellets instead if they don't take them remove the pellets and try again the next day they will take them eventually , probably after a week don't worry they wont starve..
Keep us posted on the feeding.
