I have a 125G tank with two penguin 350's for filteration, and it is stocked with a RTC an oscar and a small red devil. the tank has only had fish in it for a couple days, but it has a very strong smell and i know an aquarium will smell a little but this is way to strong i think, do I not have enough filteration or what? Has any one else had this issue? Oh and the RTC is about a foot and the oscar is like 10 inches and the red devil isnt even as big as any of them. Advice is greatly appreciated Thank you zach! (sorry about spelling I gotta leave to catch a plane in a couple minutes but ill have computer access where im going) thanks again!

sorry but what kind of smell is it?
dead fish smell?? chlorine smell? stinky foot smell?

if u dont have an activated carbon in ur filter,
u can try adding it for it to absorb this smell ur saying..
take it out tho after u used them.

Don't know about your smell but I began to notice a quite disagreeable odor everytime I walked by my tank. I kept lifting the lid and smelling the water but just couldn't pinpoint the source of the odor. One day I opened the door in the stand where I stored things and the cannister filter sat. There, partially covered by a small towel, was an overturned bottle of Prime water conditioner. It was a large bottle and it had leaked most of the contents onto the wood bottom of the stand. It smelled awful and took most of a roll of paper towels to finally get the spill cleaned up.

..could be a sign of something wrong happening to your cycling & biofilter. Check your ammonia levels, nitrites & nitrates....any & all of these can cause odors. A correctly cycled tank should not smell....period.

i get this from time to time and its always bits of food thats landed on the glass cross bar,,,? once i threw a hand full of whitebiat in and one small piece went behind the tank, man did that stink

When I first started fishkeeping I had a pacu with a bunch of other fish. He was an absolute vacuum when it came feeding time, so I always had to put lots of food in to make sure everyone ate. That tank stunk terrible.. I gave that pacu away and then I never had the problem again. I think it was just from the amount of food being put in the water. I used to do three water changes a week on that tank and it never helped until I ditched the pacu and the large volume of food.

Since the tank has had fish in it for only a couple of days, it is likely due to the filters not being cycled and/or the bacteria colony not being sufficient to consume the waste from the fish.

If the filters were cycled prior to adding the fish, the problem will take care of itself in a few days after a water change or two. If they were not cycled, things are going to be interesting.
