hey guys i set up a 72gal bowfront about a week or two ago and it smells pretty skunky and i have had a problem like this quite a few years back adn i remember buying a product to help rid of the smell quicker than normal but i can't remember what it was. do any of you know of a product to help with the bad smell? i know water changes will eventually fix it but i just wanna get the woman off my back if you smell what i'm steppin in. thanks guys!

you know i haven't checked that yet i probably should when i get home tonight. will high ammonia levels cause a skunky/swampy smell?

yes they will cause a bad smell, usually thats the culprit unless you have a fish that jumped out somewhere and is rotting. could be filters also.

I certainly had that smell recently! And Funny enough my girlfriend was giving me a very hard time. Turned out it was the ammonia lvls. Sucked.....but a quick fix is AMMOLOCK. Great product!

thanks for the advice guys. I'm sure it's ammonia because the tank has only been set up for a week or two.. I'll do a water change and add some ammolock of i can find it.

NO! Ammolock only hides the problem. You should never ever have any ammonia in your tanks. Once they are cycled with proper filtration and your bio is established, you will never see ammonia again. DO NOT hide the problem with chemical bandaids like pharmacies do. FIX the problem and get a healthy tank going.

Just remember that Ammolock actually takes about 5 days before the ammonia dissappears from water tests, but it makes the ammonia inactive immediately. It really fooled me, but just take not that you wont notice a difference in the water tests for about 5 days.
