I don't know if this is the right place to put this under but...

I recently set up a new 45 gallon and was cycling it for about 2 weeks, and today my room started to smell. This time I wasn’t the two day old pizza on my desk. The smell was coming from my filter. The filer is a HOB. For the bio media I used pot scubies, and I use the carbon inserts. All my water parameters where spot on. Any idea what caused this?

It smells like super old gym socks if that’s any help. :nilly:

all filters have a smell but if it smells bad then it sounds like a bad thing, the only time something smells bad in my tanks is when something has gone bad .

what exactly ARE your water parameters? ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? try changing out the charcoal-it doesnt last long at all. you may have something wrong in the parameters, a bacterial bloom or a dead fish (hey, its happened lol) that got in the filter.

:iagree::werd:
There has to be something dead or rotten in the tank if it smells bad.
Post ur params.

Well i wouldn't have caught it without you guys.

the guppies i put in to cycle bread and a lot of the fry got sucked in to the filter where dead and rotting... Thanks for the help.

ewwww lol. hey, it happens to all of us! good thing you caught it now.. just do a good waterchange, replace the charcoal and retest your parameters.. wait a few days and do another waterchange... you should be good then..
