Hey guys. I just was wondering in my old rbp tank the water would smell every so often. But now I have a new tank and the water is starting to smell!:irked: all my ammonia readings are at 0 , but my ph is kinda high . Right now its like a darker blue in my test kit. Around 7.6 could the ph change be causing this smell?

Are you using sand or gravel? In the normal crap gravel you get from the store alot of debris can build up below the surface. This doesnt happen with sand. Id switch to sand and overhaul your filter.

well right now I have a good filter and I am using sand, live plants, and large driftwood. Should I do a 20% water change? The only thing about this is that this is a fairly new astablished tank , so I do not want to have a large change in ph by doing a water change at this point in time.

what do you feed them? dif food like hikari cichlid pellets use to make my tank smell like crap for like 20 min.

Well thats the thing I dropped in some krill for my pbass but he gulped them up real quick so Im almost 100 percent sure the krill wasnt sitting in tank long

How often do you do a water change now?

How big is the tank? Is it overstocked?

If it's overstocked, you should be doing large weekly water changes at the minimum.

well they are new to this tank. I got them about 3 days ago. But I think I am going to do weekly 20 percents and see how it goes.

Depending on the tanks stocking and size I always start at a minimum 50% a week. My Bichir tank gets a single 75% change a week using pre treated / heated / charcoal filtered water as to not hurt the BB with the large amount of chlorine associated with a water change of that scale.

i find a lot of the time that smell is caused by the lid. tiny tiny particles of uneaten food will be stuck to the under side, they just slowly decompose their and start to smell.

sometimes its just a build up a yucky stuff caused by condensation.

i would take the lids of the tank and clean them thoroughly.
