i just got some smelt and it floats in the water. i do not feed smelt often because it does not seem to be readily available. i have gotten it in the past were some did some do not. if it is floating does this mean it is bad? i am starting to wounder maybe it has thawed then got refrozen or something. i use to get smelt more often and it all sank to the bottom.

I buy smelt by the 11lb box form gfs food mart. Its frozen so i just thaw it in hot water for awhile the dump it in the tank.. It sinks right to the bottom. Its what they call dressed smelt. The rays love it. Its pretty much what i feed them other than feeders once a week.

Dressed dose that mean the guts and head are removed? Try thaw in fridge or cold water, Hot water can cook the fish.

i cut them up in sm peaces and they are headless and gutted so i assume the swim bladder is removed?

All real smelt floats you need to pop the air sac that keeps it afloat, The only ones that do not float are silversides there two different species

yup... i would usually cut into pieces about a 1" big anyway easier for the ray to chew up

smelt is very oiley

yea they are really oily... tend to leave a lil shean on the water after a heavy feeding

Urgghhh, it's the highlight of every morning and evening squeezing 50 smelt as they defrost in luke warm water ! :yuck:

It takes a good few washes to get the smell off my hands as well !

:grinno:
