Smelts as food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Has anyone ever tried these for large fish? And is there an issue with thiamese? I saw some nice ones at the store today.
Does have some thiaminase but if not a staple then should be fine.

I get my whole fw Canadian frozen smelts from an asian market. Price around $2.50 lb. Each piece is about 4-5” in length. It’s not a staple for me, but I’ll rotate it with fz tilapia, and pellets

Those are fine, just mix it up. To combat the thiaminase, jam them with pellets to give the fish vitamin b1 and other nutrients. I used to feed my cichlids minnows and shrimps and clams and other foods with thiaminase, but I mixed pellets in with their frozen food

I may try that...my O has suddenly decided again to stop eating pellets. But Brick's no dummy, I tried a 'pellet sandwich' with tilapia...he tasted the pellets inside the fish, spat out the pellets and ate the fish! Right now he's only eating meal worms and banana. :y220d:
