I have a 1.5 gallon tank with a male Betta Splendens in it. Last night I cleaned the tank and took some gravel out, reducing the gravel layer from 2" to 1" thick. There is a 1" layer of top soil under the gravel. I have an Amazon Sword and Java Fern growing in one corner. This morning i noticed a grey "fog" seeping up around the Java and Sword from underneath the gravel. This was in an area where the gravel layer was thickest. Am i seeing gas or some sort of bacterial bloom? My Betta, Jareth is acting the same as he always is, he even swam through the "fog" and seems to be ok. When he swam through it it didn't stir up, just sort of shifted out of his way and then settled back.

Probably bacterial. I'd suck it out with a turkey baster to be safe.

Did that as soon as i saw it this morning, still seeping through. guess ill just suck it out when it starts to accumulate

I think you're right about it being bacterial, Knifegill. the water i take out smells like rotten eggs, which is what I've read anaerobic bacteria smells like

I've had snails in there, he flares at them CONSTANTLY, and uses them for soccer balls. I had to take them out and feed them to my turtle, because i was afraid he was stressing himself out. He never bothered the ghost shrimp, just hated snails ever since a ramshorn crawled through one of his bubble nests and destroyed it.

Malaysian trumpet snails mostly stay inside the gravel. They are beneficial for this reason. They keep the gravel circulated by burrowing through it.

EEEEEEEEEKK

maybe some freshwater clams? they stay in the substrate and eat up the crap. might be the answer to your dilema.

THIS IS THE ANSWER ITS hydrogen sulfide gas ur smelling it smells like rotten eggs u just didnt see the bubble but ur seeing the dirt it displased as it bubbled up AND Pyramid_Party is correct invest in trumpet snails they will help the gas exscape more i had a gas build up so bad once it exploded a huge crater and covered the tank in dirt
