Hello MFK community !!!
so iv been noticing what sounded like a hissing noise coming from my rena xp3 the past few days and figured it was a seal or air getting in or something and just let it go because my rena is bretty banked up and is always having air in the system anyways(shoots air bubble out every few minutes) anyway. Today i started smelling burning and after watching the filter for a awhile the hissing noise was not air it was coming from the power cord out of the filter, along with the noise was white smoke out of the cord and there is a cut down to the wires on the power cord just coming out of the housing.

Now after all that my question to you all is, should i risk it and just splint the wire and repair it ? or is this filter done with and should i be replacing it?
my only concern with repairing the wire is there is one bad clip on the thing already so that side is held down with bungee cords( yea i know :irked:) and iv already had leaking from the top one time before and really would not want to risk an electrical fire at the moment lol any feedback or comments would be much appreciated thank you : )

I would strongly suggest just replacing it. If it was just a power cord issue then you could try to repair it but if you're having problems with it leaking and sucking air then you're just asking for a fire. If you need a cheap replacement filter then look at the sunsuns you find on ebay. They're the Chinese equivalent of the marinelands and many people including myself run them. Not the best filter available, but I think they're the best bang for your buck.

hey inglorious thanks for the replay i appreciate it, so those sunsuns are decent then? see them on amazon for bretty cheap actually. Wierdest thing, after fixing the power cord and electrical taping the **** outta it my filter is running air tight its not sucking air or anything strange thing lol. But yes i really want to replace the thing and those sunsuns look good for the price.

agreed with inglorious .. wouldn't risk a fire if you can replace it fairly quickly and cheap. hear great stuff about sunsun .. the price you pay for the amount of water flow is a PLUS

No comment on the sun sun, but definitely agree that you definitely should replace it... better to spend a few bucks now getting a new filter, than risk coming home to a burning house..

yea thanks for the comments guys, tonight i notice under my cabinet and puddle of water and the thing is leaking now seems i get one problem fixed another pops back up i cant win with this filter i swear lol, Might just get a sunsun not sure if i want to invest in another rena just to have these problems again down the road. I would love a fluval fx5 but my wallet would not like that very much LOL.

Any other canister filters that are not to expensive and run decent i should be aware of before buying any?

Thanks again guys i appreciate the comments.

i run three sun suns and they have given me 0 problems for about a year now. i have a single hw-303b with uv on my 45 gallon goldfish tank and two hw304b's with uv on my 125. both are filled with seachem matrix. both tanks run with 0 ammonia and 0 nitirite. i think there great.
