Woll...I was changing the water in the fish tank, when I noticed my heater starting to smoke. I forgot to unplug it :duh: So I visually inspected the heater and it seems fine. My questions to y'all is do you think it's safe to put back in the tank and is it still good?

You are going to need to find that out.

Put it in an fishless tank or a bucket or a tub of water and see if it cooks the water.

Easy to know.......just have to do it.

Do not trust it.

put it in a bucket of water or the kitchen sink or something, see if it boils the water, or if the water gets cold (ie, not keeping it at the temp its set at) or if you're lucky like me, it'll work just fine and shock the living crap out of you when you go to get it out of the bucket of water....

mine did this to, but it was burning the plastic holder that it sets in. I quickly unplugged it, filled the tank back up with water ( was doing a w/c ) and plugged it back in. Everything is fine exsept the black plastic holder no longer holds the heater :irked:

You have to check that. I personally wouldn't trust it. I think I'd just buy a new one and chaulk the loss up to experience.

I have my aquarium running off a 6 or 7 outlet powerstrip. when I do a WC, i shut the powerstrip off. is it necessary to leave heaters, air pumps and filters runing while doin a WC? I doubt it. keeping it simple has solved my problem. Still, check the heater. maybe its still good.

I have let a visatherm on and out of water for almost 2 days after taking apart a tank i left it just laying on the concrete floor. It was on a power strip that i turned off then turned back on and forgot it after seeing the problem i unplugged it let it cool and put it another tank and it works well to this day.
