Hi,

I picked up 2 nerite snails. One is a zebra nerite and the other is a ruby nerite. Would these 2 snails eat my plants? Do they do a good job of eating algae? What kind of algae do they eat? I also have a big snail I got from petco a long time ago at about a nickel size, now it is bigger than a golf ball. Could someone specify an exact species on it?

I also got a hold of 3 clams. I was thinking about putting them in an outdoor pond. The pond is only like 55 gallons of water though. Would it be enough to support 3 clams or should I only add 1 or 2 of them? Could they even survive outside? I am in socal and lowest temps reach the 40s in winter and 90s and low 100s in the summer. (these are outside air temps)

I am gonna have some pygmy sunfish in the pond too, and was wondering if it would be a bad idea to mix the 2. Since I hear clams reproduce parasitically by fish host. And could someone ID them? Thx

Nerite's are absolute beasts at destroying any and all algae that they can reach. They will escape your tank and have adventures on lids, filters, etc though. They won't eat plants.
The golf ball one is an apple snail.

I would expect the clams to be fine. As for the parasitism, you're thinking of mussels.

^ Not trying to contradict you, but i have also read that clams are parasitic hosts to fish when they breed?

Anyway, the problem i see with clams is the possibility of them dying and seriously fouling up the water... if there is enough green water for them to survive on, i'd say go for it... otherwise, just keep an eye out of how they are doing...

It might be hard to check on the clams later. I may only put one in the pond. Just for the fact I would want there t be enough food to support them. I hear they eat other things beside green water. Like bacteria and other microorganisms in the water. Someone even said they will eat small fish and inverts.

^ Yeah, i can't say for sure what they eat besides green water or free floating algae since i never really found out too much info on feeding habits...

But i did have one die in my tank one and boy did it ever smell bad when i pulled it out... probably would have smelt worst if i didn't have shrimp in the tank picking at what was left...

Stick ur clams in a small basket. they can be checkd on easily then
