hi guys.
I started a new tank which will have some low light plants in.
I want to transplant some javaferns i have. Now the tank with the ferns has a snail infection, transfering it will most defnatly infect the new tank aswell.
How can I prepare and rid the ferns of snails and eggs.
I read of someone using a 1/40bleach solution. If i can use this method please give me some instruction of how to go about it.
O the snails(unknow) are small,1/8 of and inch perhaps.
thanx.

Get some clown loaches to eat the snails, im pretty sure they will cean it up in no time

use copper sulphate bleach is a bad idea.

I've read that copper can stay in a tank a long time, which can kill certain aquarium species?

Khuli loaches stay small and might help with the snails. Also, just feed less and remove them whenever you see them, and they'll eventually leave. A lettuce trap might work on them too. I think there are threads on here about how to do a 17:3 or 19:1 water:bleach solution on plants.

Howdy,

You talk about it as if it was a disease. Instead, you should look at is as biodiversity. Snails are your clean-up crew and indicators of overfeeding. They only get out of hand if you feed too much. You should thank the guys and be glad to get a few into the other tank. They will not destroy your Java fern, I've only seen large apple snails go for that. Just remove excess snails by hand and start to feed less.

clown loaches grow extremely slowly, so might be awhile before you would upgrade

C'm on, that's just bad advice. Jax is a responsible fishkeeper, I wished there were more people who only get fish that they can house for life.
And yes, Botia lohachata would work. They will eat snails and also accept prepared food when the snails are gone. Get 3-5, they like to school.

Howdy, right about the approach :), but wrong about the kuhlii. They do not eat snails. Copper indeed kills all invertebrates, i.e. shrimp, crabs, mussels, snails. It might hang around a while but can be removed by water changes and carbon filtration.

Best of luck,

you can do a potassium permangenate dip for teh plants or a 20:1 water to bleach dip. Make sure to rinse the plants really well before adding them to the tank.

Adding a fish to take care of a problem is rarely a good idea. You need to limit your feeding and increase your maintenance. Make sure your plants are healthy. Snails can only really readily reproduce with a food source. Pick out the adult snails and squish them to feed your fish. Increase gravel vacs to a few times a week. Feed every other day for a few weeks. Your snail "problem" should greatly reduce.
