I found 2 cluster of snail eggs hanging on the underside of my 40g tank and wondering what happens when they hatch. Will just just fall into the water or Will they make their way down the side and into the water?
Are yours also hanging upside down under the hood?I'm curious as well. I have about 1000 hatching in the next week. May have underestimated their reproduction rate....
So if they do fall into the water then could I put a net or something under the eggs so that they don’t get eaten by tetras as they fall? If I can do that then could I also keep them In that net or move to a plastic container until they get a bit bigger.I assume these are either apple snails (Ampullariidae) or 'mystery snails' (Viviparidae), as these are the types commonly placing egg masses outside the water.
In either case, as eggs hatch, the mucus/fluid contained in each egg, usually forms a droplet that falls into the water, carrying each tiny snail. The whole mass may hatch within a day or two, although sometimes part of the egg mass does not contain viable eggs. Most baby snails don't need to crawl into the water but some might.
