Stuck in the box again.
I found a different kind of snail in my tank last night when I was doing a water change. I have no clue if it was under the rocks, on the rocks, on the glass, on a decoration or where when I started but I found it on top of the rocks and promptly took it out with the intent of taking its picture to get an id on it.

Well I must be an idiot because the stupid thing ran away or I lost it so hopefully a discription will answer my question. :irked:

The shell was cone shaped and less than a cm long, not quite a bleachy white but not truly a shade of brown either. The opening was about 1/3 the length of the shell. I think it might be an assasin snail but I don't know if there are any look alikes that are found in aquariums. I know I have normal evil snails that eat plants and make a mess so I bought 3 yo yo loaches. I'm not sure though if they leave the shells when they eat snails but I have quite the collection of empty snail homes in my tank now.

Snail infestations can be a pain in the A to get rid of. Your probably dealing with Melanoides tuberculata, Trumpet snails if they are really long and pointy. These are live baring snails that can breed pretty rapid. Usually comes from eggs on live plants. Id usggest treating with something befor they get too out of hand.

Yeah, googled it and the pics look right. I'll have to keep an eye on them... I'm getting rid of one snail population right now and just found that little guy. I'm possibly killing the rival snails off and making room for them to feed and breed.

Thanks

Melanoides tuberculata, Trumpet snails, are great for aquariums, they eat left over food and stay out of sight most of the time. occasionally they do get out of control if you over feed but they stay buried in the gravel most of the time. They certainly do no harm.

I wish I had Trumpet Snails in my aquarium... I'd like them to be kind of the clean up crew... But yeah from what I heard is that they stay in the substrate during the day and come out at night to feed on whatever
