I have run carbon in my aquarium with snails and they flourished, but not as a result of the carbon per se. Its main purpose is to assist in removing organic matter.

I just finished a huge battle with ick and then fungus and I put the carbon in to clean the meds out and then realized I might have put the snails back into, a really toxic environment.
