Snail Problem

ok my pond is overrun with ramshorn snails. It was ok at first but now theyre breeding like crazy and thier eating my submerged plants. how do i get rid of them.


btw, the only fish in there are a bunch of mosquito fish/ sailfin mollies that i caught and one goldfish.

You could try http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile79.html ,

or a copper sulfate product but these are harsh and may kill fish (and it stays in the water).

And you could always bait and catch them...put pieces of cucumber in different spots in tha pond, the snails will be attracted to it and oyu just pick them out as a group.

Larger cichlids may eat them and some native shellcrackers too.

Maybe if they where in Northern Maine and Southern Califonia. lol. Anyway one native snail eater, I think, is the green darter. They suck the snails out of their shell though so you'll have a bunch of snail shells in the pond.
 
If you were up here in Gainesville I could tell you where to get some nice little native shellcrackers...

Try putting in a queen botia or two - the one in my daughter's tank keeps it baby snail free - theres just like 3 or 4 good sized ones, and they are certainly reproducing, but the botia just sucks 'em up.
 
I use Clown Loaches to keep them under control in my planted tank.

Here in south fla. I have had jaguar cichlids that love to eat those ramshorn snails. also other members have suggested shellcrackers, I would also suggest native suckers or maybe koi, but I don`t know about koi for sure,but my pond with koi has less snails than my ponds without koi.I would definately stay away from chemicals IMO. Rich
