how do snails benefit your tank? i know they eat dead plant and organic matter. but what else? ive got about a dozen small snails, about the size of the ehad of a pen and half a dozen white mystery snails about the size of a nickel. and how can snails hurt ur tank? i heard somewhere they put off alot of nitrates. Ive got them in a 125 with some plants and a single RTC... dont worry im ready to upgrade when it becomes necessary. any advice on the snails would be great and id love to see some pictures of ur snails.

I'd think one of the biggest benefits is helping to keep the glass clean of algae. They're better at it than a lot of the algae eating fish out there, imo.

yea but im sure theres more

Probably not much more than that for most snails. If looking at MTS, they help keep the substrate stirred up (oxygenated). Other than that, eating algae and some plant waste is about it besides being cool to watch.

Edit: Some fish eat them, but that can be a good or bad thing depending on whether you want the snails alive or not. ;) Some also will destroy a planted tank, (Apple Snails, etc), which could be a big negative..

Eat leftovers. They do NOT hurt the tank except when the owner tries to overcrowd his tank with several snails more than the tank size and filtration can handle. I wouldn't combine the apple snails with RTC.

What does mts stand for?

Yea last night when I went to bed there were only 2 big snails left.... my rtc made total carnage of the others.... bits of shell and meat everywhere. Good news though, the little ones were feeding on the left over snail bits and my rtc left them alone
