Hey guys I'm back again with another question. So I just bought a used fx6 canister filter yesterday. Upon cleaning and opening it up today I found a few snails in there. They seem to be pest snails that I found while cleaning the bio media. So my question is how do I make sure that they don't transition over to my tank? My 180gallon is already running a canister filter so I am in no rush of putting this filter on. I cleaned it out today and made sure I washed everything down. Then I took all the media and sponges and dried it since this morning? Would bathing the media and canister in the sun for at least 2 days get rid of the snails or should I do a bleach soaking also? Thanks for reading guys. The snail in the picture was alive when I found it but dried it out in the Sun to test it out.

How recently used? If it's been dried out sitting in someone's shed for a few months, it will be fine to use. Give it a good rinse. If it was last used a couple days ago, let all the media, sponges, etc dry out in the sun for a few days.

It was taken off of his tank on the day I purchased it, which was yesterday. I'll let it dry out for a few days.

I would not let bleach sit in there that long. Chlorine is toxic to pretty much anything organic. Here is how I would do it.

Set up a 5 gal bucket, a small tank or a rubbermaid container on which you can run the filter. Fill the container with water and add bleach. Make sure it does not contain anything but bleach- no scenting, no slash control etc. Uusally the store brand basic bleach is what you want. Concentrated is fine.

I would do about 10% bleach and 90% water. Then run the filter for about 15-20 minutes, When done dump the bleach water, and then repeat the process but this time with water to which you have added a healthy dose of dechlor. Run the filter this way for a few minutes. When done, remove all dead snails and you are good to go in terms of using the filter on a tank with fish.

Thank you guys for the input, once I get home I will run it through some bleach so it will get into the hose, inlet and outlet. I've completely forgotten that snails may be inside the hoses too.
