I added twelve large trap door snails to my 90 gallon mixed cichlid tank to help control the algea. Its a mix of small three to four inch oscars and parrot fish. The snails are always on their backs and will not come out of their shells. Occasionally, when there is one on the class ten minutes later I find it on its back in the sand. Do these guys not normally tolerate snails? I have a bunch of nerite snails in with my rose queen and there are no problems.

I have a 5 gallon aquarium where I let snails breed like crazy for live food. My cichlids love them, especially my Oscars.

For algae control in a cichlid tank, I recommend getting a pleco.

:iagree: plecos work the best snails are just basicly fish food ot they MIGHT survive. maybe:popcorn:

oscars like to play with them they are proubly grabbing them and pulling them off the glass get bigger snails or non at all could try apple snails but that may end the same way but i do like snails they clean better then plecos plus arn't as big of a bio load

Thanks for the advice. My snails are actually really large espceially compared to the fish. I ended up pulling the snails out of the tank. I might try to hunt down some larger bushynose plecos. I do not want to get a common pleco. In my experience once they grow over four inches they are useless.

yeah theres tons of plecos to try but if its just for algea on the glass then go with plecos but if its extra food or algea on rocks or plastic plants go with snails
