do they really clean your tank glasses? or just leaving them with slimes?

Which snails do you have? You cannot see their slime trail that easily. I keep lots of snails and never see any slime trails at all. If they appeared to secrete heavy amounts of slime, then it may mean something is wrong with your water conditions that is stressing them.

I keep ramshorns and bladder snails, and used to have nerites (before I accidentally killed them with my praziquantel treatment). These ones do clean the glass efficiently. Apple snails and MTS on the other hand do not and seem to prefer food leftovers and decaying plant matter.

Actually, all snails in my opinion, are valuable inhabitants of every tank. While many people do complain of their potentials to overpopulate the tank, it is the aquarists' fault for the most part because it indicated overfeeding and inadequate maintenance on their part which they fail to accept.

Most are not a cleanup crew but an interesting addition to a tank with specific dietary needs. For cleaning glass, you would want nerite snails. They are very efficient algae eateres but willl lay small sesame sized eggs on the glass and hardscape. These eggs will not produce viable offspring, but many find them a bit unsightly in and of themselves.

mmm the lfs here called them golden snails, I dunno if they're that effective

Golden snails are an apple snail species (most likely). They are not efficient cleaners at all and have a high bioload for their size.

oh no I think you're right which is why i saw them all the time making those waste in the tank, well, I will soon remove them from my tank though,
just a couple days ago I saw chinese algae eaters, are they effective as cleaners??:screwy:

algae eaters need more and more algae as they grow, hence their name.

What is yoru tank size and stocking? that would help for us to be able to recommend compatible tankmates

thanks, the tank is very small as well as the occupants, its only 16 galls, and there are currently 17 albino corys (1/2"), 2 syno catfish (1"), and 4 golden snails in the tank; well, I'll remove those snails soon, and plan to add some more corys,
cheers

Your advice is completely off the base, Ocean. That's not the typical behavior of CAEs. Their taste for algae lessens as they mature which is the opposite of what you claimed. They are territorial by nature, one reason I don't keep CAEs anymore.
