I got an infestation of snails, what can I do? I'm not going to add any fish to eat them. I'd rather get to the source, what causes snails to thrive in a tank and what can I do about it? I normally don't have a problems with snails, but they're everywhere.

Feed less, skip days, clean any food sources unless you own grazing fish. These will leave the snals foodless and will control thier breeding and activity. Or you could spend 30 minutes manually removing any snail you can find. Any removal of snails will help.

There is way too many, and some of them are TINY. Is there any kind of chemical I can buy at the LFS or petsmart?

why wouldn't you want to add fish to get rid of them? a chemical wouldn't get the source of the problem any better then adding loaches would. the problem is they were introduced into your aquarium, and there isn't a way to solve that now that they are there.

your best bet would be yoyo loaches or clown loaches depending on your tank size.

don't use chemicals as they kill the snails perfectly fine, but then you are left with hundreds of dead snails foulling up; your water and sending your ammonia/nitrites/nitrates sky high.

if you ABSOLUTELY would have to use chemical warfare, place a piece of zuchinni in at night and pick it out in the morning with all the snails on it, trying to get out as many snails as possible. then use the chemical and be prepapred to do daily LARGE water changes until the snails are completely done rotting.

believe me, its much simpler to get 3 yoyo loaches and let them go wild, then return them to the store 2 weeks later with your tank being snail free.

Or you can Stop buying Plants for the fish tank. Thats how you most probably got all the snails. yeah, I'd let some fishies eat them :D, I Myself let the snails survive because there so cool!!!!!

Well, they dont just 'appear' there. Of course they come with plants.
Always thoroughly check your plants over and over for any miniscule snails.

I dont have problems with the snails, unless they affect visibilty, it just look nasty to have them covering the glass. It's a 10 gallon with guppies and fry (food for 60 gallon) so do loaches eat guppy fry?

loaches don't eat anything besides snails. they shouldn't be in the 10 gallon for too long though....thats a pretty small tank for some loaches, so try and get some smaller yoyos....no 5" monsters lol
