I just got a job at a petstore and am really starting to think about getting a snake. I want something that doesnt need a tank bigger then a 40g or so.

I am also wondering if anyone knows of a site that has a great community like MFK but for snakes. I do not know much about snakes and want to start learning. thanks in advanced!

The three best beginner snakes usually reccomended are milk snakes, corn snakes, and ball pythons. All stay small and are very tame. They are easy to feed (well, ball pythons like to not eat for a few months, but that's normal for them). I'd reccomend any of the three, they are all pretty cheap.

Personally, I like ball pythons best. I like the body shape, and the way that instead of moving around quickly like milks and corns will, my ball python is content to wrap around my wrist and chill. :)

I feel like a ball python get too big for me. My local pet store has a kenyan sand boa for $99. It has great color. How are they?

do a kenyan sand boa or cali king snake. the sand boa will hide a lot but has great color, and is easy to keep, 4 inches+ of sand a slab of sandstone or shale and a good heat lamp and small water dish. the cali king needs 3 inches + of shredded aspen or coco fiber, sand works for large adults, a medium-large water dish some climbing space and a few hideouts. the sand boa will not dissapoint. keep it warm, 85+ farenheit, or else it won't eat. both would be great. don't do a ball python, they need high humidity and are just big and fat. i personally have a cali king, but looked at a kenyan sand boa for about a year, before i choose the king because of the sand boa hiding all the time. hope this helps.

Yeh thanks a lot, great info! Its a toss up for me getting a reptile. I am thinking a bearded dragon or kenyan sad boa.

get a kenyan sand boa , there small , eat good and are easy to keep.
u can use an under tank heater for them so no light is necessary.
have a trio myself and they are so easy to take care of .

corn snakes get longer than royals...although the same average size corns tend to grow longer and are bloody fast...hence y im selling all mine. also bitey lil things.
royals r lovely temperament but a pain in the butt to feed. they r slow and beutiful little faces which u can see because they dont just shoot off at the slightest lil thing lol like corns.

ball python, corn snake, milk snakes, kingsnakes, and things like that are all great to start with and do not get too big.

www.redtailboa.net is a good forum for snakes too. I would avoid repticzone though, I have seen a lot of misinformation given out on that site.
