I have about a 500 gal pond with 5 red snakeheads in it. Its just square with a rubber pond liner, no subtrate. It has a custom wet dry filter with another pond pump(about 1400gph) to help circulate the water better. After a few good feedings of fish filets or smelt or anything messy the water is full of small bits of food still and it just never seems to find the filter. Is there a better way to clean out the pond. Id rather not have to wade into it every few days and clean it manually, Id really like a filtration system that is fairly self sufficient and just needs regular filter maintenence. Or even a cheap vaccum or something to help out. Thnx.

Hmm, strange. Your pond pump should do the trick perfectly! Is it maintained okay, cleaned regularly etc. Maybe cleaning the piping to improve flow of it?
If your filtration will still refuse to sort this problem, i suggest doing what a lot of us do, and invest in a big but 'fine threaded' net. So i never overloaded filtration after a big messy feed, i would swoop the water with this net and it would pick up masses of the debris from the food. And it would only take a few minutes of swishing the net threw the water gently.

Get a bigger pump. If it's only turning the water over 2 times an hour, it's probably not enough. The better your circulation, the more that will go in your filter

why dont you feed what they can eat, instead of throwing in a hand full of food. feed each fish basically. small enough peices to get consumed not tore up n get hella messy. throw them in a few pieces at a time so they get eaten right away and don't over feed. no more mess... my tanks have all been more clear since i started feeding what they can eat.

Limiting feeding will help some...

Where is the fiter inlet located vs the return?

If it's on the side, would it be possible to relocate it to the center, and direct the return water to a side to promote a circular water flow, garbage will comdense in the center and be removed by the filter inlet. If the return isn't strong enough add a second pump on the other side of the tank with it's output pointed to perpetuate the water flow. Add a sponge filter on the inlet of this pump for add filtration.

Got any pix?
