what would be the lowest water temp thet you could keep a giant snakehead in
in the winter months my pond gets as cold as 10degC will they be able to handle this temp for a month or 2 or is it to cold

not sure of giants, but marulius, striatus, stewartii, barca and spec assam can handle it.know this coz im in assam and the winter temp drops to around minimum 7-8deg c and no probs, they just reduce eating.i'd try to keep the temp above 16deg tho, just to be safe

Barca can't, my tank temp droped to 13 deg C and it started spirralling out of control. I then upped the temp to 17 deg C over a few hours and it went back to normal. I have seen this a few times now.

adaptation is needed.you cant expect a fish living in 25deg all its life to suddenly thrive at 15deg.
ive caught all these fishes myself(barca being a little rare, but still found in places locally)

giants are tropical , all species from assam are sub-tropical hence can survive lower temps ,but tests carried out on maurlia captured in sourthern florida have shown an absolute low temp range of 10 deg

pyro - you state the temps in assam drop to 7-8 deg , i take it this is air tempreture , which could make water tempreture around 10 + deg in certain parts of river , or are you saying the water temps drop that low?

also the giants have a very poor lower temp range ,and personally would not risk anything below 22 deg and only for a short period

i dont think ashdavids have been at 25deg all there lives , iam sure he keeps them at sub-tropical temps and they where all wild caught within the last couple of years , again diferant parts of the river will drop to diferant temps that is maybee why they have such a short range throughout the system , it would indeed make sense if further up and down stream temps fell below 13deg and the barca could not survive over winter , again would be interesting to take some temp readings in diferant parts of the system to see what the water actually gets down to.

also if you can catch barca ,why on earth are you not exporting them , you could be a very rich man ,

I would hope a gradual drop in temp fro 22 deg to 13 deg over three months with a cooler would be enough time for them to adapt. I was dropping the temp about 0.1 deg every day or so and when it hit the 13's the fish became aggitated and was acting abnormal and started swimming upside down and became unresponsive. No more controlled way to adjust a fish if you ask me.

Oh ,btw my snakehead tanks have four seasons, but I don't let the tanks go below 15 deg.

ok ill measure water temps nxt winter ;) .but i do get readings of my garden pond and have to have a 300w heater and a bubblewrap cover at all times to keep the temp above 14degs.otherwise falls to 9-10
yeah ive caught barca.export?hmmm....
hey ive caught stewartii in very cold hill streams.in meghalaya

Funny ,I was under the impression that the spot where barca are caught was secret. Mind informing me how you caught the barca? What I mean to say is what method was used?
