Hi guys,

I am just started my research into Snakeheads.. I have started off by keeping some Channa sp. Assam which I found cheap and thought were relatively rare.

Can you guys give me an idea about the ranking of snakeheads in terms or rarity or exclusivity (also considering their attractiveness in a tank)?

I think the top spot belongs to the Channa Barca, while the Gachuas are probably closer to the bottom of that list..

Can someone fill in the rest?

(I am interested in the Auranti.. Not interested in Micropeltes..But, I know a store which has Pulchra for sale..)

Thanks,
Sid

i would get a channa ornatipinnis because ornate snakeheads are very good looking

For my opinion.
The most rarity SH is the SH that u cannot found it in every LFS in this world.
It's not a Barca.
Maybe Nox, sp Mekong, Amphibeus...
Ole'

Agreed with Oleoleole, though until a live (or even dead) one of these is found and studied more, I reckon they should stay off this list.
So it would probably then be Barca, though these are becoming a lot easier to find these days, and cheaper too.

Now find me a Platinum Barca, that would be a raratie lol!

As for Assam, they are pretty much common snakeheads.

Hmm.. Maybe I am not phrasing the question right.. So, let me jot down my intension:

There are several snakeheads available in India and most are native to India. Some of these are desirable for Aquariums others are not.

If I am given a choice between several Snakeheads with different prices, I was looking for direction in terms of price-points for some of these species.

For instance:
I got 5 sp. Assam for about 3 USD each.. I know that the regular Belheri should be cheaper than sp. Assam and Gachua should be even cheaper than both Belheri and sp. Assam as Gachuas are more common..

Going by above logic, what is the relative position of Pulchra, Auranti, etc in this hierarchy?

Hi,its true it all depends on the nation where your living and the species your seeking, for example-channa bleheri (in Italy) costs 8 to 40 euro depending where you buy it,in India it costs much less, also another important factor to consider is if the desidered species is being reproduced by local hobbyists!

Prices seem to fluctuate. I look out for bargains. Here's what I paid for mine in the UK.

All juvenile

Asiatica x 4 - £7 each
Auranti x 4 - £10 each
Assam x 4 - £10 each
Ornate x 4 - £5 each
Gachua x 4 - £2.50 each
Gachua Krabi x 4 - £5 each
Orientalis Kottowa x 5 - £3.50 each
