Snakeheads

Or better yet, don't try your luck on a big fine and get a bowfin. :)
They're pretty nice from what I've heard. :)

yes all species are banned sense 2002. The Lacey Act prohibits the importation and transportation. I was asking if there were listed as Lacey Act and something else for the fact that they cant be kept. In the us we are allowed to own trout and the family Salmonid is on the Lacey Act. Also you can own and sell Burmese python but you can not import or export them. this is at least true for Minnesota. my question lies with why are the family Channidae so "banned" that owning a snakehead is illegal.

sorry to draw this question out i'm just curious.

Because they can and will live in American waters without too much adaptation required.
And most importantly because they can and will kill everything in these waters.

The US seem to want to protect their native species, can we blame them?

So yep, they're banned from import, export, you can't own them, nor carry them alive in a truck or anything else. You are allowed to fish for them, if and only if you kill them right as they come out of the water. As far as I remember, you are not even allowed to put them back in after you reeled one out.

I believe Channa Argus is the reason this ban took place, because it could live as far north as Canada. But you can find Micropeltes and other tropical channas in some states further south.

the Lacey Act was put into place with protecting native species in mind so it is more then likely a good thing that snakeheads are on the list. I just find it interesting that the whole family is banned in all of the US . of corse I would love to own some giants but I know how dumb people are with aquarium fish and how bad that is on the environment. It is a shame that people are the way they are.

Interesting indeed!
Reason is you can probably have any kind of channa live in at least a part of the US, and they're very likely to become the dominant fishes of the area. Hell, even dwarf channas would probably be a disaster for some lakes, because even if they don't pose a threat to the bigger natives, they'd still make snack of all the small ones.

I live in the US and I'd love a dwarf species or even a sting ray that's too bad. Asian aros are a bummer as well
