got a baby common snapping turtle, and his shell is really soft towards the tail. what can i do to harden it? it was kept by a friend who just kind of threw him in a nasty little tank. he is about the size of a silver dollar

just keep the water clean and give him a nice varied diet, that should do the trick. baby turtles are pretty resilient (especially snappers) so with proper care, he should bounce back immediately and with no permanent ill effects.

At that age they should be fed a high quality turtle pellet like Reptomin along with live earthworms, snails, shrimp and crickets. They can also be fed thawed shrimp, fish fillets, cichlid/koi pellets, shrimp pellets and various aquatic plants like water lettuce and anacharis. Feed a variety of foods and don't just focus on one kind. Oh yeah, and don't feed it goldfish.
