You want a big or a small one? If you want a small one I think your endeavor is passable but if you want a big one you should really reconsider what your doing. This like all turtles grow slowly, mature late and adult ones live for a long time, wille small ones have a very high death rate. Adult ones are for these reasons very important for their populations, specialy females and taking even one, specialy from such a small sistem does count. If you want a small one you can take it without to much harm because the chances it will reach adulthood are slim, but even then this is not something you should do because captive bred snapping turtles are readbly avaible and normal small ones are cheap! if you want a big one why not contact a local reptile rescuing group to see if they have some in need of a good home? That way you get one free and you give a needy animal a good home!

i agree with above poster.. and snapping turtles are a long committment.... and need a larger and larger pond... better off letting them be....

snapping turtles are not in need of any protection, there are PLENTY of them out there and their numbers are currently growing. I don' t think it would be a problem if you were able to catch one.

You are rigth but to say they are comon in every part of their range is a missunderstanding, actualy many populations are severely endangered from colecting of adults for asian food markets. As already stated before one wild hachling is passable, but why do it when you can get a cb one cheap or a adult one FREE? Snappers are one of the most often dumped turtles at rescues, after sliders. Oh and they do need protection, the colecting of wild females above 12 inches should be completly banned, if this animals have some hope to survive in the future.

at the oment i have 2 snappers a bbay florida snapper and a sub adult common snapper i doo know how big they get i have seen them and caught them i have been reptile hunting for almost 15 years but i just recently (in the past few years) started catching turtles

Ditto that on humans. Man I got into a heap of trouble last hunting season when I tried to bag one of them flourescent orange ones!
