I can't believe I never posted these pics! I went to Cuba last year in March and took a catamaran trip and we got to go snorkeling, play with dolphins and for a walk on an island with a sand bar that went for ages! Anyway, I have a point and shoot waterproof camera and I thought I would share the pics of my dive! Now I don't know the ID's of a lot of salt water fish so feel free to help me out :P

The port we left from.

Parrot fish of some kind? You could hear them crunching on coral :D

So I am swimming around some of the corals that are quite compact with a few caves and things and I peek in this section and I loose my mind! I can see a shark. I was soooo excited! I tried to go around from all the angles to see if I could get a better shot but unfortunately this is the best I could do :( Just above the little fish in the cave you can see the tail end of the shark.

A big puffer fish had to have been the size of a beach ball.

Brain coral 4' across

So I'm swimming around with my head down looking at that brain coral and I look up to see someone swimming at the surface of the water then I look right below him. He is swimming over a coral shelf that is maybe 4" deep in the water and right below him is this guy. I tried to motion for him to move over or away but he didn't understand. Luckily nothing bad happened. I couldn't help myself and I stuck around to try and get some decent pics of him...which was hard to do lol.

Thanks for sharing the pix...very cool. Us Americans don't' get to see too much from Cuba because of the embargo so that was a little treat. What parts of Cuba did you visit?

Looks like the lionfish disregard the embargo but there does not seem to be too many of them in that area.

This was an amazing trip! I could have stayed out snorkeling all day! But when I noticed there was no one around me I booked it back to the catamaran just in time...I was the last person aboard and they were pulling up the anchor as I was getting on! Oops!

My resort was the Melia Cayo Santa Maria near Santa Clara. It was on an island that only has resorts on it.
While there I also took a day trip into Santa Clara and got to ride on a steam train through a city, go to a cigar factory, visit the Che Guevara memorial, go to a local hot spot for shopping and relaxing and finally to what I believe my tour guide said was the oldest church in Cuba. It had burned down and only the 24 karat gold altar remained. They rebuilt a new church around it. The altar was at least 50' high and 30' across with intricate details embossed into it.
Amazing trip! I would love to go again and fly into Varadaro so I could be closer to go and see Havana!
