Snowflake eels escaping

I have two snowflake eels that keep climbing into the overflows and then end up in my filter below the tank. I was thinking about putting some kind of plastic mesh to block the eels from getting in there. I need it to be still allow junk to get through but have small enough holes to keep the eels from getting through. Any ideas?

The mesh is exactly what I was gonna suggest. You may wanna cover the entire top as well so that they can't climb over it and drop though the top.

Just remember with the mesh to diligently clean as it may cause a flood if backed up

Good point on the cleaning the mesh. Still haven't found anything. I hate to buy something online. I think I need to see it in person to ensure the eel cannot make it through. They are slippery little suckers.

Drill holes into a piece of plastic or acrylic. Since if will be at the top of the tank there won't be a lot of pressure. You can use a tuberware cover and glue it on.
