Hey guys, I've been part of this community for quite a little while now... Although I'm more of a lurker than a talker... :banhim: No longer can that be however, since I've found myself in need of some guidance.

Today I got rid of all my tanks, 3 to be exact, and the many beautiful fish in them:cry:. Two were sold to some relatives, but my 180 gallon was actually donated a small children's clinic close to my home.

Anyhow, onto the main story! I've officially been accepted into Toudai, Tokyo University, and am currently waiting for some papers to present at the Japanese embassy. I'm really excited that such a school would accept me, but while I was in Tokyo for a week taking the entrance exams I came to discover something. The dorm I will be staying at has no space... My walk in closet here in the USA is possibly the same size as the dorm room itself, if not bigger, so the odds of me having anything over a 20 gallon tank will be impossible.

Tokyo is a really expensive city... So I really cant afford to fork out the cash for a big apartment either. That being said, I was wondering if any of you experts know of some cool Japanese fish I can have in a 5/10/20 gallon tank that will still allow me to call my self a monster fish keeper...

Since goldfish wont really satisfy me. Japan should have some cool small tank fish right? Not everything over there is made into sushi.

Judging from some of the books i've seen (which are all by Japanese authors), Japan seems to have almost everything and every thing from small Tetra's to Pima's... so i think its going to come down to what the LFS' near you (in tokyo) has at the time your there...

As far as small fish go, you could always do a Dwarf Puffer tank if you want a pred tank...

Funny thing that you bring that up, I did manage to find on LFS near my hotel, but they only sold feeder fish.... I asked the owner if there was a second floor to the store or something, but he explained to me that it was more of a tank shop... It was like... Filters, tanks, gravel, etc heaven.

Very expensive heaven.

I like the idea of the puffers. Some pea puffers would be a nice thing to come home to and will also give you alot more personality as far as fish go. In those cramped quarters I'd figure you'd want some personality anyway;)

Yea puffers seems like a good idea tbh, I'll wait it out and see tho...

I was also thinking of a Chinese butterfly crab, but we'll see.

Yeah, as great as Japan is, the stuff there is also extremely expensive... then again with space being a precious commodity, i'm sure a that any one putting in a 200G+ tank must really really love their fish, or be some one like Mr. Takashi Amano...

As for pea puffers, in the books i've read they say they are pretty common over in Japan, as are GSP's presumably... so if you really want to get some it shouldn't be too hard to find...

Common fish :irked:

Lol, yea I'm leaving at the end of this month, so after I hit the classes I'll check the stores out.

Well, i guess its common only cause they are really small, but very cool predators... even over here in Hong Kong Dwarf puffers and GSP's are two puffers you can get pretty much year round at Fish Street.. but back on topic, i'm sure once your there you'll probably find some other weird and wonderful things around... after all Japan's the place for that kinda stuff...
