so i did a slight water change today (about 20 days after initial setup, only 5 days after having fish) of about 10% of the water, the dumping the water in, which i tried to do super carefully but still managed to move some of the stones, which pushed some of my stones and releases tons and tons of this god-awful fog and fish crap and blood worms.

so i immediately went in with the siphon to get the big crap out, which moved more stones which released more crap. i finally removed all the stones and did 20% water changes about ever 20 minutes till i had most of the big crap out.

Now the water is fairly cloudy, and it seems that my filter (AC70) isnt really helping any. I went from practically crystal clear to fog.

Now, is there anything i can do or am i doomed to cloudyness for a while?

Tank- 20g
filter- Aqua clear 70 (used to be called the 300 i think?)
fish- two really small oscars (temp. home)

well for starter your tank isnt even half as big as it should be for one oscar 55 gallons is recommended at the minimum for one oscar, these fish are dogs in the fish world and eat and poo lke crazy, i know you think its ok because they are small but its not please sell these guys and get something along the lines of a tetra ir what not, your 20 gallon isnt enough to hold one cichlid. that being said you can get a new tank but cycle it to, from what ive read it seems you feed your fish and then dont pic p left over food, any food left over should be picked out asap to avoid ammonia and other chemical builds ups thats the clouds and junk you saw when you moved all the stuff around, please get rid of the oscars via selling or trade and prepare yourself before you buy fish again and know what they need!!!! im sorry that this might seem like im just trashing you but you seriously need a bigger tank or smaller fish.

unfortunately i have to sound like a prick.

I'm not selling back the fish. They will have their permanent home within the next month. The blood worms went in last night for the first time and all ive fed was i think 4 minnows because they wouldnt come out for anything else and floating food which ive removed completely within 15 minutes (i think i found 1 stray food pellet?).

there will be no gravel in there at all anymore so i wont have problems with things "hiding". and im not using blood worms again.

So some advice on what to do now would be greatly appreciated, because unless you want to come bring me a tank, they can wait till the end of the month.

thats my butt-hole-ness for the day, im already tired and frustrated from tearing a barn apart trying to afford their fricken permanent home and then i come home to this mess.

sorry, and thanks.

sorry if it offended you but i had no better way to say it, all you need is a bigger tank for these 2 guys, you can get a used 55 for a good price on craigslist list just set up a nice filter for them and theyll both be ok in the 55, keep up with 25% water changes weekly and like your doing scoop up any food thats not eaten, try and get them off minnows that will only lead to hole in the head disease and its not a pretty thing, try and not feed them for a day or two and then put a few pellets in and they should go for it, best of luck to you though and i hope it all works out for you.

well i just typed up a huge response but do to "server error" i lost it :irked:

to summarize:

sorry if i offended back.

as far as the tank goes, i have a 55 on the way possibly. will know for sure once the guy gets back from vacation. otherwise, i have about enough money for a good 80+ gallon tank

you mentioned cycling, im not too stressed about it really, it turns out my well water is incredibly good after testing with multiple kits. my tank was cycled in about a week (with a TINY bit of a hardness problem and a microscopic bit of nitrites if i recall).

i know theres more to add.. cant think, need to :chillpill:

oh yeah, i got a free 200 gallon plastic pond liner thing if i REALLY need something. i could jumpstart it with my media and have it ready to go in a short period of time, but i think they can wait?

how big are the oscars?

an absolutely ginormous 2.5 inches. cute little rascals, too.

tank is 24"X12", dont know the dimensions of the 55, but if i had to make a guess, it's probably atleast 40" long by maybe 18 wide? just guessing, all i know about it is my sister and brother in-law say "ITS HUGE".

yea youll be ok for another month or 2 at most then its time for a upgrade, standard 55 is ok for 1 oscar but you can get away with a second one easy as so long you keep up with water changes, for the time being on your 20 gallon do 30% water changes weekly and get them off minnows if you can, its fun to watch i did it when i was younger to because it was "cool" but when your fish gets sick with hole in the head after 3 years of owning it its not so cool and you wish you had not done it. but like i said you have 2 months maybe a bit longer to get a new tank depending on the oscar growth, bu they will grow with a blink of a eye good luck though.

thanks.

forgot about the feeding. i used the minnows to bring them out of hiding, then went straight to pellet food.

i tried the bloodworms and that was 90% of my mess. never again. otherwise its just pellets for these guys.

are homebred, gut loaded shrimp alright in the future? been thinking about a good use for this pond..

they can live in a pond no problem as so long the temp is in their range
