Aggression is always a problem with CA cichlids and having an established territory. I have never had any success in adding adult or similar sized fish to a tank. My main show tank is a 150g, which has had a lot of the same fish in it for about 2-7 years. I have had no aggression issues introducing new fish by growing out fish to a size where they cannot be eaten, but kept small compared to the established tank mates. My theory is that a new small tank mate is not a threat to fight for food and mates, so the larger fish ignore the new fish. In time this fish grows with the current tank mates, and things seem to work out in the long term. Anyone else do this? Has this worked for you?

This works for me as well. My Texas wont tolerate fish his size or bigger but I introduced smaller Firemouths and HRP's and they have been fine for a while. 1 HRP is gaining on him in size so we will see.

Nothing has worked. One usually goes beast mode and kills mates 1 day. I keep some pretty nasty fish though. RTMs, Jags, labiatus, etc etc.

I've tried smaller texas with my labiatus, but they just get harassed to no end. Parachromis just murder when the lights go out or the amphilophus harass none stop has been my experience so far.

I do that for new arrivals, though to be fair I don't really buy adult fish, I enjoy watching fish grow up :)

My usual way is remove all decor and current occupants, introduce new fish with rearranged decor give a few hours add new fish and watch. Usually works

That works to an extent. Put 5 small convicts in with a salvini. Salvini ate 2 of them, and they were stuck in his throat for 2 days.

That is where it gets tricky. I just added a 3-4" salvini and was a little worried my p. loisellie would eat her being about 9". I made sure there were a lot of small hiding places. The salvini isn't shy at all and the loisellie is well fed. So far so good.

Salvini was about 2.5 inches, cons were about .75. They were my dad's con fry and he had to get rid of them. That male salvini has also killed some of my dithers lol. Real mean guy, heres a pic of him now at about 4 inches plus
